WHEREAS, On May 23, 1919, the efforts of many Southern Californians were brought to fruition upon the signing of Assembly Bill 626 into law, establishing the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA); and
WHEREAS, In 1929, UCLA opened its campus in the Westwood neighborhood of Los Angeles, where it sits today; and
WHEREAS, In 1950, UCLA alumnus Ralph Bunche (Class of 1927) became the first person of color to win the Nobel Peace Prize; and
WHEREAS, In 1956, an extraordinary development in modern medicine took place at UCLA when the first open-heart surgery in the western United States was performed at UCLA Medical Center; and
WHEREAS, In 1964, a UCLA alumnus once again made history when graduate and faculty member Paul Terasaki made organ transplants possible through the development of the tissue-matching test; and
WHEREAS, In 1969, UCLA proudly involved itself in the birth of the internet when Professor Leonard Kleinrock sent the first message, making UCLA the first node on the ARPANET; and
WHEREAS, In 1981, UCLA physicians once again established themselves as trailblazers in modern medicine when they reported the first cases of AIDS in the world; and
WHEREAS, In 1984, UCLA was home to sports history when it hosted gymnastics and tennis competitions for the 1984 Olympic Games; and
WHEREAS, In 1990, a UCLA faculty member once again made groundbreaking history when physician Guido Guglielmi created the Guglielmi Detachable Coil, which profoundly transformed the treatment of brain aneurysms; and
WHEREAS, In 1998, UCLA played a role in another major step forward for medicine when the federal Food and Drug Administration approved the first genetically targeted breast cancer treatment, which was developed by the University’s Dr. Dennis Slamon; and
WHEREAS, In 2006, UCLA Professor Terence Tao was awarded the Fields Medal, which is recognized as the highest honor in mathematics; and
WHEREAS, In 2007, UCLA once again made a historic impact in sports, becoming the first university to win 100 National Collegiate Athletic Association team championships; and
WHEREAS, In 2010, UCLA surpassed $1,000,000,000 in competitively awarded research grants and contracts in a single year; and
WHEREAS, In 2014, UCLA was first in California and sixth in the nation for the number of alumni serving in the Peace Corps; and
WHEREAS, In 2017, the New York Times ranked UCLA as the top institution in the United States for economic upward mobility; and
WHEREAS, In 2018, the Academic Ranking of World Universities recognized UCLA’s stellar track record, identifying it as the 11th best university in the world; and
WHEREAS, In 2018, U.S. News and World Report found that UCLA was the best public university in the United States; and
WHEREAS, UCLA has time and time again proven itself to be the apex of higher education; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Senate of the State of California, the Assembly thereof concurring, That the Legislature expresses its genuine gratitude to the University of California, Los Angeles, for serving the people of California in the most humble yet dignified manner; and be it further
Resolved, That the Legislature reaffirms its pride in having a university like UCLA, with its astounding and profound achievements in both academia and sports, as part of the state’s public postsecondary education system; and be it further
Resolved, That the Legislature acknowledges the integral role UCLA has played in making California the powerhouse it is today; and be it further
Resolved, That the Legislature, with the utmost exultation, extends its congratulations to UCLA for its triumphant recognition as the best public university in the United States; and be it further
Resolved, That the Legislature fondly commends UCLA for all the history it has made, and all the stories it will help write in the future; and be it further
Resolved, That the Secretary of the Senate transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
