BILL NUMBER: SB 1429 INTRODUCED BILL TEXT INTRODUCED BY Senator Steinberg FEBRUARY 21, 2014 An act relating to civil damages. LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST SB 1429, as introduced, Steinberg. Civil damages: medical malpractice. Existing law, referred to as the Medical Injury Compensation Reform Act of 1975 (MICRA), limits the amount of damages for noneconomic losses in an action for injury against a health care provider based on professional negligence to $250,000. This bill would declare the intent of the Legislature to bring interested parties together to develop a legislative solution to issues surrounding medical malpractice injury compensation. Vote: majority. Appropriation: no. Fiscal committee: no. State-mandated local program: no. THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA DO ENACT AS FOLLOWS: SECTION 1. It is the intent of the Legislature to bring interested parties together to develop a legislative solution to issues surrounding medical malpractice injury compensation.
