Relative to Violence against the LGBT Community in Chechnya.


LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST


HR 38, as introduced, Cunningham.

WHEREAS, There have been numerous reports of kidnaping, violence, and murder against the LGBT community in Chechnya, perpetrated by the government of Chechnya; and
WHEREAS, The United States Ambassador to the United Nations called upon Chechen authorities to investigate these allegations; and
WHEREAS, The State of California calls on Chechen authorities to immediately investigate allegations of violence against the LGBT community, hold those involved accountable, and take steps to prevent future abuses; and
WHEREAS, California must defend human rights for those who cannot; and
WHEREAS, California has a proud history of standing up for the rights of persons of diverse backgrounds; and
WHEREAS, California is home to over 1.5 million members of the LGBT community; and
WHEREAS, California calls upon the international community to investigate and take action against those responsible; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That the Assembly condemns the alleged violence, kidnaping, and abuse of LGBT members in Chechnya; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
