   WHEREAS, The Department of Motor Vehicles was established in 1915
to register vehicles and license motor vehicle operators; and
   WHEREAS, The Department of Motor Vehicles is part of the
California State Transportation Agency and is headquartered in
Sacramento, California; and
   WHEREAS, The Department of Motor Vehicles is known as "the face of
state government" through its 174 field offices and staff of
approximately 10,000 dedicated employees who serve more than 24
million licensed drivers and process nearly 33 million vehicle
registrations annually; and
   WHEREAS, The Department of Motor Vehicles' mission for the past
100 years has been to serve the public by providing quality licensing
and motor vehicle-related services and, through a century of
innovation, promoting traffic safety by licensing drivers,
registering and titling vehicles, regulating the motor vehicle
industry and collecting revenue on behalf of state and local
governments; and
   WHEREAS, The Department of Motor Vehicles collects nearly $7
billion in fees annually to support other state agencies, local
governments, and the state's General Fund; and
   WHEREAS, The Department of Motor Vehicles is a leader in utilizing
technology to enhance customer service provided to millions of
Californians, offering online services to the public beginning with
vehicle registration renewal in 2000, and currently offering 18
convenient online services to customers 24 hours a day, seven days a
week; and
   WHEREAS, The Department of Motor Vehicles was named a 2013
Computerworld Honors Laureate in the Innovation category for its vast
social media efforts using Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube as
alternative avenues for communicating directly with customers; and
   WHEREAS, The Department of Motor Vehicles earned two of the Center
for Digital Government's Best of California Awards in 2011, for its
Web-based tool for customers to retrieve their driving records and
for "DMV Now"-the Android and iPhone applications that allow
customers to access DMV information and services using their
smartphones; and
   WHEREAS, The dedicated employees of the Department of Motor
Vehicles support nonprofit organizations, such as the American Heart
Association and the March of Dimes, statewide and in their local
communities through volunteerism and donations; and
   WHEREAS, The Department of Motor Vehicles is celebrating 10 years
as the official partner of Donate Life California; and
   WHEREAS, The Department of Motor Vehicles successfully implemented
the Safe and Responsible Driver Act (Assembly Bill 60) on January 1,
2015, demonstrating its commitment to the safety of the motoring
public on our California roadways; now, therefore, be it
   Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, That
Wednesday, May 13, 2015, is observed as the Department of Motor
Vehicles' Centennial Celebration Day, in recognition of the
Department of Motor Vehicles' century of service to the people of the
State of California; and be it further
   Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of
this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
