CALIFORNIA LEGISLATURE— 2023–2024 REGULAR SESSION

Assembly Joint Resolution
No. 7

Introduced by Assembly Members Hoover and Mathis

May 30, 2023

Relative to Iran.

LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST

AJR 7, as introduced, Hoover. Iranian Quest for a Free Iran.
This measure would express that the Legislature stands in solidarity with the people of Iran and supports their aspirations for a democratic and secular republican government, as provided.
Fiscal Committee: NO

WHEREAS, The people of Iran have been bravely protesting for their fundamental rights and freedoms in recent years, particularly since September 2022; and
WHEREAS, These protests are rooted in the more than four decades of organized resistance against the Iranian dictatorship, led by women who have endured torture, sexual and gender-based violence, and death; and
WHEREAS, The Iranian people have been deprived of their fundamental freedoms, so they are rejecting monarchic dictatorship and religious tyranny, as evident in their protest slogans; and
WHEREAS, The Iranian regime has arbitrarily and brutally suppressed ethnic and religious minorities, including Iranian Kurds, Baluchis, Arabs, Christians, Jews, Baha’is, Zoroastrians, and even Sunni Muslims, deprived them of their fundamental human rights, and in many cases, executed them; and
WHEREAS, The American people support the Iranian people’s desire for a democratic, secular, and nonnuclear Republic of Iran. This sympathy was manifested in absolute majority support in the United States House of Representatives in the 118th Congress for House Resolution.100, where it noted that “on June 30, 2018, tens of thousands of people gathered in Paris at the Free Iran gathering where they showed support for the opposition leader Mrs. Maryam Rajavi’s 10-point plan for the future of Iran, which calls for the universal right to vote, free elections, and a market economy, and advocates gender, religious, and ethnic equality, a foreign policy based on peaceful coexistence, and a nonnuclear Iran.” This Jeffersonian platform righteously deserves the backing of every American; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly and the Senate of the State of California, jointly, That the Legislature stands in solidarity with the people of Iran and supports their aspirations for a democratic and secular republican government that respects human rights and the dignity of all individuals; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
