Korean peace process.
This measure would, among other things, encourage participants in specified discussions regarding North and South Korea to have a sincere intention of achieving peace in the region and declare the Legislature’s commitment to peace in the region.

WHEREAS, The 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang presented a unique opportunity for North and South Korea to engage in diplomacy and begin a new dialogue; and
WHEREAS, On April 27, 2018, history was made when South Korean President Moon Jae-In and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un crossed over the Korean Demilitarized Zone, marking the first time the leaders of the two nations have done so, and sat down together to discuss relations between the two countries; and
WHEREAS, At this meeting, both sides agreed to 1) improve inter-Korean relations with the ultimate goal of reunification, 2) reduce tensions and eliminate the danger of war, and 3) establish a robust peace regime; and
WHEREAS, The two leaders also announced that they share a commitment to pursuing complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula; and
WHEREAS, United States President Donald J. Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un have agreed to sit down with one another in the coming months to further discuss the prospect of peace in the region; and
WHEREAS, These meetings mark a sharp turn in relations for both North and South Korea, which have been engaged in conflict since June 25, 1950; and
WHEREAS, 2018 marks the 65th anniversary of the armistice between the two countries that followed the Korean War, yet, the Korean peninsula is still divided as it was in 1953, with the Demilitarized Zone guarded by artillery and patrolled by troops; and
WHEREAS, Korea remains the only country in the world still divided by north and south; and
WHEREAS, This decades-long conflict has split families and had a devastating impact on the people of the Korean peninsula; and
WHEREAS, The prospect of peace in this region has been a distant dream for so many who call Korea home for far too long; and
WHEREAS, These recent meetings represent a source of great hope for peace for the Korean people and the world at large; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly and the Senate of the State of California, jointly, That the Legislature encourages all sides in these discussions to come to the table with the sincere intention of achieving peace in the region; and be it further
Resolved, That the Legislature shares in the hopes of the Korean people for the success of all future meetings; and be it further
Resolved, That the Legislature declares its commitment to peace in this important region; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
