WHEREAS, Scleroderma is a chronic, systemic autoimmune disease primarily characterized by the hardening of the skin, its hallmark symptom, but its impact can extend far beyond the skin to involve internal organs, which can lead to severe complications; and
WHEREAS, Scleroderma is distinguished into two main types: localized scleroderma, which mainly affects the skin, and systemic sclerosis, which can affect large areas of skin and vital organs, including the heart, lungs, kidneys, and gastrointestinal tract; and
WHEREAS, The exact causes of scleroderma remain unclear, but it is thought to arise from a combination of genetic and environmental factors, leading to an overproduction of collagen; and
WHEREAS, Statistically, scleroderma affects approximately 300,000 Americans, of which 80 percent are women who are usually between the ages of 30 and 50, although it can manifest at any age; and
WHEREAS, The diversity in symptoms and severity makes scleroderma a particularly challenging disease to diagnose and manage, often requiring a multidisciplinary approach to treatment that includes rheumatologists, dermatologists, and other specialists; and
WHEREAS, The impact of scleroderma is profound due to the progressive nature of the disease and its effect on multiple body systems; and
WHEREAS, The psychological and socio-economic impacts of scleroderma on patients and their families are considerable, affecting quality of life and daily functioning; and
WHEREAS, In the State of California, recognizing the need for increased awareness and support for scleroderma is crucial; and
WHEREAS, The Scleroderma Foundation of California funds education and awareness programs with a mission to empower the scleroderma community to live their best lives through programs dedicated to support, education, and research; and
WHEREAS, The establishment of Scleroderma Awareness Day aims to enhance public understanding of the disease, promote early diagnosis and treatment, and mobilize community resources and support for those affected; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby declares June 29, 2025, as Scleroderma Awareness Day in California, acknowledges the significant challenges faced by individuals living with scleroderma, and affirms the state’s support for medical research and advocacy efforts aimed at combating this debilitating disease; and be it further
Resolved, That the declaration of June 29, 2025, as Scleroderma Awareness Day in California reflects the state’s commitment to public health and the well-being of its constituents; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
