Relative to Officer Jonathan M. De Guzman Memorial Bridge.

ACR 9, Gonzalez Fletcher. Officer Jonathan M. De Guzman Memorial Bridge.
This measure would designate the Palomar Street Bridge on Interstate 805 in the City of Chula Vista, California, as the Officer Jonathan M. De Guzman Memorial Bridge. The measure would request the Department of Transportation to determine the cost for appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, to erect those signs.

WHEREAS, Officer Jonathan M. De Guzman was fatally shot while in the line of duty on Thursday, July 28, 2016; and
WHEREAS, Officer De Guzman was a 16-year veteran of the San Diego Police Department, a member of the Gang Suppression Unit, and a member of the Special Weapons and Tactics Unit; and
WHEREAS, Officer De Guzman received the San Diego Police Department’s Purple Heart award in December 2003 for being wounded in the line of duty in August 2003; and
WHEREAS, Officer De Guzman and the Gang Suppression Unit were also recipients of the San Diego Police Department’s Meritorious Service Award for Outstanding Bravery in March 2016 for their actions in subduing an individual whom the officers feared posed a dangerous threat to the community. When the officers apprehended the individual, they discovered his vehicle contained homemade weapons, pipe bombs, CO2 cartridges, and a pyrotechnic device; and
WHEREAS, Officer De Guzman was loved and appreciated by an overwhelming number of friends and neighbors in both the law enforcement community and the community at large; and
WHEREAS, Officer De Guzman leaves behind his wife, Mary Jane, his son, Jonathan II, his daughter, Amira, and his parents, Enrique and Fe. He is remembered as a model police officer, husband, father, brother, son, and member of the Chula Vista community. His love of law enforcement and public service was well known, and it is appropriate to make a fitting tribute to all the contributions Officer De Guzman has made; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates the Palomar Street Bridge on Interstate 805 at Milepost 5.07, number 57-861 in the City of Chula Vista, California, as the Officer Jonathan M. De Guzman Memorial Bridge; and be it further
Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is requested to determine the cost of erecting appropriate signs, consistent with the signing requirements for the state highway system, showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, to erect those signs; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the Director of Transportation and to the author for appropriate distribution.
