Relative to the Day of the Teacher.

ACR 45, Quirk-Silva. Day of the Teacher.
This measure would proclaim May 6, 2025, as the Day of the Teacher.

WHEREAS, Teachers have always been vital pillars in nurturing and developing the minds of future leaders, innovators, and the work force of California; and
WHEREAS, In today’s educational landscape, addressing teacher hardships such as the high cost of living, teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms, lack of resources, pupil mental health issues, as well as violence and safety concerns is crucial to maintaining strong and healthy educational systems; and
WHEREAS, Teachers deserve to be honored in the highest regard for their resilience, their dedication, and the ongoing support they provide to our pupils; and
WHEREAS, Teachers consistently engage in professional development efforts to improve their teaching methods and address the diverse learning needs of each of their pupils; and
WHEREAS, The presences of culturally diverse teachers have been shown to positively influence pupils of color, improving academic performance, graduation rates, and aspirations for higher education; and
WHEREAS, Today, a teacher’s duty to protect children extends beyond teaching academics as they safeguard critical thinking, historical accuracy, and diverse perspectives that prepare pupils to be informed citizens who can navigate a complex world with empathy and understanding; and
WHEREAS, California long ago recognized the immeasurable value of our teachers, and the second Wednesday in May has traditionally been recognized as the Day of the Teacher, a special observance that honors teachers and the teaching profession; and
WHEREAS, The Day of the Teacher has been recognized by the California Teachers’ Association and the Association of Mexican American Educators since 1982; and
WHEREAS, California has patterned its celebration after the traditional El Día del Maestro festivities observed in Mexico and other Latin American countries; and
WHEREAS, The national Day of the Teacher will be celebrated on May 6, 2025; and
WHEREAS, The Day of the Teacher should be a day for school districts, parents, public officials, and the community to recognize the dedication and commitment of teachers who are educating our children; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the day of May 6, 2025, be proclaimed the Day of the Teacher; and be it further
Resolved, That the Day of the Teacher be a reminder of the collective responsibility we share in supporting educators, from legislative support to local community efforts. Let us honor teachers by ensuring they have the respect, resources, and opportunities they deserve to continue shaping our future; and be it further
Resolved, That the Legislature hereby urges all Californians to observe the Day of the Teacher by taking the time to remember and honor all individuals who give the gift of knowledge through teaching; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
