Wetterling and San Bernardino County Sheriff's Lieutenant Alfred E. Stewart Memorial Highway. LEGISLATIVE COUNSEL'S DIGEST ACR 127, Adams. CHP Officer Larry L. Wetterling and San Bernardino County Sheriff's Lieutenant Alfred E. Stewart Memorial Highway. This measure would designate the segment of State Highway Route 15 between its junction with State Highway Route 138 and Oak Hill Road, in the County of San Bernardino, as the CHP Officer Larry L. Wetterling and San Bernardino County Sheriff's Lieutenant Alfred E. Stewart Memorial Highway. The measure would request that the Department of Transportation determine the cost of appropriate signs showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources covering that cost, to erect those signs. WHEREAS, On March 9, 1973, California Highway Patrol (CHP) Officer Larry L. Wetterling and San Bernardino County Sheriff's Lieutenant Alfred E. Stewart were killed in the line of duty; and WHEREAS, On that date, CHP Officer Wetterling stopped to assist a driver along the southbound side of State Highway Route 15. The driver, who was a recently paroled convict, killed Officer Wetterling and stole his patrol car; and WHEREAS, Having been notified that there was a paroled convict out on a killing rampage, Lieutenant Stewart answered the call and found the criminal but, unfortunately, Lieutenant Stewart was also killed; and WHEREAS, CHP Officer Larry L. Wetterling, born in Monmouth, Illinois on March 9, 1942, had a childhood dream to serve as a California Highway Patrol Officer; and WHEREAS, Officer Wetterling graduated from San Bernardino High School in 1960 and attended San Bernardino Valley College; and WHEREAS, Officer Wetterling worked as an assistant manager for CarpetMasters prior to joining the California Highway Patrol on November 6, 1967, and graduated from the California Highway Patrol Academy in Sacramento on March 1, 1968; and WHEREAS, Officer Wetterling's first assignment was in the Riverside area until he transferred to the San Bernardino area on March 12, 1970; and WHEREAS, Officer Wetterling was survived by his wife Catherine, daughter Shelly, and now deceased daughter Terri, his mother Carmen, his now deceased father Carl, his sisters Shere and Carol Ann, and many friends and coworkers; and WHEREAS, Sheriff's Lieutenant Alfred E. Stewart was born in Jersey City, New Jersey, on May 24, 1933. He was the oldest of eight children; and WHEREAS, Lieutenant Stewart attended Henry Snyder High School. He left school at 16 years of age and joined the United States Marine Corps and served in the Korean War; and WHEREAS, Lieutenant Stewart met his wife, Marie Bordina, and they married in June 1952; and WHEREAS, Lieutenant Stewart was wounded in both legs in 1950 and he received an honorable discharge from the Marine Corps on January 4, 1954; and WHEREAS, Lieutenant Stewart worked for Columbia Southern Chemical Corporation. While there, he held various union offices, including that of Union Local President; and WHEREAS, Lieutenant Stewart attended the Industrial Labor School for Union Officials at Saint Peter's Prep, in Jersey City; and WHEREAS, Lieutenant Stewart received an honorable discharge from the Marine Reserve as Staff Sergeant in 1965 after 14 years of service; and WHEREAS, Lieutenant Stewart joined the North Bergen Police Force in North Bergen, New Jersey, in 1960. He became a detective and was a member of the Vice Squad. In the Police Detective Bureau, he worked in criminal investigation and arrests; and WHEREAS, Lieutenant Stewart and his family moved to California in 1964, and he was hired by the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department; and WHEREAS, Lieutenant Stewart was one of the founding members of the California Narcotic Officer's Association and served as the eighth president in 1972; and WHEREAS, Lieutenant Stewart was survived by his wife, Marie, two sons, Michael and Matthew, and his daughter, Marie. His son, Michael, passed away in 2007; and WHEREAS, In 1973, the California Narcotic Officer's Association created the Alfred E. Stewart Memorial Award to memorialize Lieutenant Stewart by honoring individual achievement of working narcotic officers; and WHEREAS, After his death, Lieutenant Stewart's mother stated that he always wanted to be a Marine and a lawman; and WHEREAS, It is important to recognize the sacrifice made by these peace officers for the people of California; now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature hereby designates the portion of State Highway Route 15 between its junction with State Highway Route 138 and Oak Hill Road, in the County of San Bernardino, as the CHP Officer Larry L. Wetterling and San Bernardino County Sheriff's Lieutenant Alfred E. Stewart Memorial Highway; and be it further Resolved, That the Department of Transportation is hereby requested to determine the cost of appropriate signs consistent with the signing requirements for the state highway system showing this special designation and, upon receiving donations from nonstate sources sufficient to cover that cost, to erect those signs; and be it further Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the Department of Transportation and to the author for appropriate distribution.
