Hanbok Day.
This measure would proclaim October 21, 2023, and the same date each year thereafter, as Hanbok Day in the State of California.

WHEREAS, The hanbok is the traditional attire of the Korean people; and
WHEREAS, Korean Americans living in the State of California and elsewhere in the United States desire to contribute to and share their cultural heritage with the State of California and with the United States; and
WHEREAS, Thirty-six cities around the world, including the Cities of Abu Dhabi, Rome, Warsaw, São Paulo, and Budapest, celebrate Hanbok Day and participate in the cultural heritage by wearing the traditional hanbok; and
WHEREAS, The origin of the hanbok can be traced back to 2333 B.C.E., when the legendary god-king Dangun founded the first Korean kingdom, Gojoseon. Portraits of Dangun depict him dressed in garb resembling a hanbok; and
WHEREAS, During the 10th century A.D., the hanbok evolved to represent the influences of the period; and
WHEREAS, To contribute to the people of the State of California and to celebrate the diversity of American society, Korean Americans have worn the hanbok during many important events throughout the State of California; and
WHEREAS, The hanbok has been a continuous part of traditional Korean culture, society, and history for over 2,000 years; and
WHEREAS, The hanbok represents important ancient traditions that benefit all of society by demonstrating beauty, stability, and respect for ancient Korean tradition; and
WHEREAS, In 1996, the Republic of Korea declared October 21 as Hanbok Day; and
WHEREAS, The Korean American community desires to designate a special day, Hanbok Day, to invite all residents of California to share in its cultural heritage by wearing the traditional hanbok; and
WHEREAS, By recognizing Hanbok Day, Korean Americans encourage all citizens to participate and celebrate the beauty of Korean culture; now, therefore, be it
Resolved by the Assembly of the State of California, the Senate thereof concurring, That the Legislature proclaims October 21, 2023, and the same date each year thereafter, as Hanbok Day in the State of California; and be it further
Resolved, That the Chief Clerk of the Assembly transmit copies of this resolution to the author for appropriate distribution.
