A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION DECLARING STONE COUNTY, MISSISSIPPI, TO BE THE "MURAL COUNTY OF MISSISSIPPI" AND ENCOURAGING TOURISM TO THE COUNTY.

     WHEREAS, Stone County, Mississippi, located just north of the Coast and just south of Hattiesburg – "In the Middle of It All" – is home to 22 murals depicting the county's vibrant history and rich heritage; and

     WHEREAS, the murals are part of the Telling Trees project, celebrating history through the arts, which preserves the history of the county and encourages artistic expression of the county's heritage; and

     WHEREAS, these murals, scattered across the county, have received numerous write-ups in the news media both within the State of Mississippi and beyond; and

     WHEREAS, the murals, executed in varied media including mosaic tile and paint, are located in public areas including schools, parks, the "Dizzy" Dean Rest Area on U.S. Highway 49 in Wiggins, a church, financial institutions, the Wiggins and McHenry libraries, and the Perkinston Campus of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College; and

     WHEREAS, more murals are located in Wiggins' Blaylock Park than any other single location in the county, which is located at the foot of Historic Pine Hill; and

     WHEREAS, Blaylock Park also is home to the county's annual "Pine Hill Festival," which recently attracted a record number of visitors to the community and at which the county's 22nd mural was dedicated; and

     WHEREAS, in addition to adding to the rich heritage enjoyed by the people of Stone County, the murals have proven to be a tourist draw, attracting visitors from across the nation to see the artistry and history represented by the murals; and

     WHEREAS, the Mississippi State Legislature wishes to recognize the artistic endeavors of Stone County and acknowledge the county's place as an arts center and the "Mural County of Mississippi":

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That Stone County, Mississippi, is hereby named and declared to be the "Mural County of Mississippi," and that visitors to the great State of Mississippi, and Mississippians traveling within our state, are encouraged to make Stone County one of their destinations to enjoy the impressive artistry and rich story that is displayed on the murals.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That upon adoption hereof, duly authenticated copies shall be transmitted to the Governor; the Honorable Scott Strickland, President of the Stone County Board of Supervisors; the Honorable Jerry Alexander, Mayor of the City of Wiggins; Mr. Jay Paul Gumm, Executive Director of the Stone County Economic Development Partnership; Mrs. Kathryn Lewis of the Telling Trees project; Division of Tourism of the Mississippi Development Authority; and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
