HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 604
Commending the Town of Marshall.

 

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, September 6, 2023

WHEREAS, the Town of Marshall, a historic town in Fauquier County that serves as a gateway to the Commonwealth's glorious Piedmont region, celebrates its 225th anniversary in 2023; and

WHEREAS, established as Salem in 1797, the Town of Marshall was renamed in honor of United States Supreme Court Chief Justice John Marshall, whose ancestral home, Oak Hill, is located in nearby Delaplane; and

WHEREAS, the Town of Marshall epitomizes the cultures of horse riding and fox hunting that are defining features of the Commonwealth and its history, with many beautiful and bucolic horse farms situated throughout the area; and

WHEREAS, the Town of Marshall offers many quality restaurants, bakeries, and other boutiques and shops and regularly draws visitors from the surrounding region who are looking to luxuriate in the pace and pleasures of small town life; and

WHEREAS, the Town of Marshall has several churches, a community center, and a library that make it a wonderful place for residents to live, work, and raise a family; and

WHEREAS, to celebrate the 225th anniversary, the organization Marshall Moving Forward, in cooperation with the Fauquier Heritage and Preservation Foundation and the Afro-American Historical Association of Fauquier County, have organized special events such as lectures and historic walking tours throughout 2023; and

WHEREAS, the special character of the Commonwealth is rooted in towns like Marshall, which encompass both the state's rich history and its enterprising spirit of progress and renewal; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Town of Marshall hereby be commended on the occasion of its 225th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Town of Marshall as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for the town's history and its contributions to the Commonwealth.
