| WHEREAS, Mark Twain Dual Language Academy in the San | ||
| Antonio Independent School District is celebrating its 100th | ||
| anniversary in 2023; and | ||
| WHEREAS, San Antonio citizens voted in 1922 to establish | ||
| a pioneering junior high school system for students in grades | ||
| six through eight; the resulting eight campuses, which were | ||
| named after notable figures of American literature, opened in | ||
| 1923 and offered a bridge between elementary and high school | ||
| and a more challenging curriculum to better prepare students | ||
| to succeed; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Ably guided by principal David Garcia and | ||
| assistant principals Elena Aldaz and Gisella Calejo, Mark Twain | ||
| Dual Language Academy currently serves students in | ||
| prekindergarten through the eighth grade; the school opened as a | ||
| dual language institution during the 2017-2018 school year, and | ||
| its unique curriculum allows students to receive academic | ||
| instruction in both Spanish and English; the academy also offers | ||
| extracurricular programs such as mariachi and sports, and it has | ||
| been recognized with an A rating; and | ||
| WHEREAS, For the past century, this noteworthy institution | ||
| has provided its students with a strong educational foundation on | ||
| which to build, and it has made a positive and lasting difference | ||
| in the lives of generations of San Antonio residents; now, | ||
| therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th | ||
| Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commemorate the 100th | ||
| anniversary of Mark Twain Dual Language Academy and extend to its | ||
| students, faculty, staff, and alumni sincere best wishes for | ||
| continued success; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be | ||
| prepared for the school as an expression of high regard from the | ||
| Texas Senate. | ||
