Felipe Cordero | ||
WHEREAS, Residents of Presidio County lost an admired | ||
civic leader with the passing of Felipe Cordero on January 1, | ||
2023, at the age of 79; and | ||
WHEREAS, Born in Redford, Phil Cordero entered the | ||
workforce at the age of 14, with only a sixth-grade education; he | ||
earned his master plumber's license and ran his own business | ||
until his health began to fail; and | ||
WHEREAS, Mr. Cordero was deeply committed to his community | ||
and served in many capacities; for 33 years, he was a Presidio | ||
County commissioner, and he played a key role in such projects as | ||
the courthouse restoration, development of the MAC Building, and | ||
street paving in Presidio and Salsipuedes; he also championed the | ||
county's needs and advocated for domestic and international trade | ||
at the state and national level; as president of the chamber of | ||
commerce, he worked tirelessly to expand business opportunities; | ||
he was instrumental in the construction of the grandstand and dance | ||
floor for Marfa Lights and of the scoreboard and soccer fields for | ||
the Vizcaino Field; in addition, he was active in the Paisano Lions | ||
Club and AMVETS, and he gave generously of his time and expertise to | ||
the Marfa Independent School District, fixing plumbing, supporting | ||
school events, and officiating and commentating baseball games; | ||
moreover, he sponsored summer youth softball and baseball leagues, | ||
and he assisted the Mercedes Cemetery Association in numerous | ||
cleanup efforts and in the building of the chapel; and | ||
WHEREAS, Devoted to his family, Mr. Cordero raised seven | ||
children on his own; he was a mentor to many others as well, and | ||
he set an inspiring example through his kindness, gentle | ||
strength, steadfast integrity, and deep faith; he was preceded in | ||
death by his wife, Nora S. Cordero, with whom he shared a | ||
fulfilling marriage; and | ||
WHEREAS, Phil Cordero made a lasting, positive difference | ||
through his selfless contributions to his community, and he will | ||
be remembered with respect and admiration by all who were | ||
privileged to know him; now, therefore, be it | ||
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th | ||
Legislature, hereby pay tribute to the life of Felipe Cordero and | ||
extend sincere condolences to his loved ones; and, be it further | ||
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be | ||
prepared for his family and that when the Texas Senate adjourns | ||
this day, it do so in memory of Felipe "Phil" Cordero. | ||
