| WHEREAS, The Maverick Boys & Girls Club of Amarillo is | ||
| celebrating its 90th anniversary in 2024; and | ||
| WHEREAS, The organization traces its origins to 1934, when | ||
| Chanslor E. Weymouth, Cal Farley, and Roy Pool established the | ||
| Maverick Boys Club at a building donated by Mary E. Bivins; from | ||
| 1934 through 1982, the facility was supervised by director Ralph | ||
| Dykeman, and in 1983, it opened its doors to girls for the first | ||
| time; today the club serves more than 1,000 young people every year, | ||
| equipping at-risk youth with the tools they need to reach their full | ||
| potential and to become engaged and productive members of society; | ||
| and | ||
| WHEREAS, Since 1952, the club has operated from the Maverick | ||
| building on South Lincoln Street; working in partnership with the | ||
| United Way of Amarillo & Canyon and other organizations, it | ||
| provides programs in the areas of character and leadership, | ||
| education and career, health and life skills, the arts, and sports, | ||
| fitness, and recreation; the club's offerings also include computer | ||
| science, peer support, scouting, and 4-H initiatives; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Throughout its rich history, the Maverick Boys & | ||
| Girls Club of Amarillo has remained faithful to its mission of | ||
| providing young Texans with a safe and nurturing environment in | ||
| which to build healthy relationships, confidence, and self-esteem, | ||
| and it is a pleasure to join in recognizing the organization on this | ||
| notable milestone; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas | ||
| Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commemorate the 90th | ||
| anniversary of the Maverick Boys & Girls Club of Amarillo and extend | ||
| to all those associated with the organization sincere best wishes | ||
| for continued success with their important work; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be | ||
| prepared for the club as an expression of high regard by the Texas | ||
| House of Representatives. | ||
