  H.R. No. 1547

R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Over the past five decades, the Haltom City Senior
  Center has distinguished itself as a valuable community resource;
  and
WHEREAS, The center traces its origins to 1972, when senior
citizens in the area began gathering at an apartment complex
clubhouse on Lower Birdville Road, where they received meals from
Senior Citizens Services of Greater Tarrant County; it was proposed
that Haltom City build a senior center, and five years later, the
municipality provided land and funds from the Housing and Community
Development Act to construct a 5,000-square-foot facility on
Bernice Street; the Haltom City Senior Center opened on May 8, 1977,
under the oversight of Tarrant County; and
WHEREAS, In 2019, the city approved plans to renovate the old
library as a new home for the senior center, however the project was
put on hold after the COVID-19 outbreak in 2020; despite the senior
center being closed due to the pandemic, staff and volunteers
continued working, delivering meals, picking up groceries, and
staying in contact with residents who relied on the services
provided by the center; it reopened in February 2022 and
subsequently moved to its present location on Friendly Lane; and
WHEREAS, Today, the center serves more than 400 members, and
its meal roster includes individuals from 20 cities; through a
partnership with the Tarrant Area Food Bank and Father's Heart
Ministry, the facility hosts monthly food distributions for area
residents, and it provides daily meals in collaboration with
Metroport Meals on Wheels, local churches and businesses, city
employees, and community volunteers; seniors enjoy such activities
as arts, crafts, bingo, quilting, and billiards, and the center
also offers computer classes; the facility continues to add
programs and services while welcoming new community partners; and
WHEREAS, For half a century, the Haltom City Senior Center
has played a critical role in meeting the needs of area residents,
and it is indeed a pleasure to join in recognizing the facility on
this special milestone in its history; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 88th Texas
Legislature hereby commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Haltom
City Senior Center and extend to all those associated with the
center sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for the center as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
