A RESOLUTION

Designating the month of April 2009 as "Hemophilia Awareness

2

Month" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, Hemophilia is a genetic disorder that impairs the

4

body's ability to control bleeding; and

5

WHEREAS, Hemophilia is defined as excessive, uncontrollable

6

bleeding because of a missing or low-level clotting factor in

7

the blood; and

8

WHEREAS, Bleeding may occur even when there is no injury and

9

most often occurs in the joints and in the head; and

10

WHEREAS, There are approximately 18,000 United States

11

citizens with hemophilia, and each year approximately 400 babies

12

are born with the disorder; and

13

WHEREAS, There are approximately 1,700 citizens of this

14

Commonwealth living with hemophilia; and

WHEREAS, Hemophilia affects males almost exclusively and is

2

found in all populations; and

3

WHEREAS, There is no cure for hemophilia, a lifelong

4

condition that must be controlled with intravenous infusion of

5

factor replacement therapies; therefore be it

6

RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate the

7

month of April 2009 as "Hemophilia Awareness Month" in

8

Pennsylvania.
