Senate Resolution 47

(As Adopted by Senate)

A RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE MERIDIAN HIGH SCHOOL "WILDCATS" BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM AND HEAD COACH RONALD NORMAN FOR WINNING THE FIRST MHSAA 7A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

WHEREAS, the Meridian High School "Wildcats" Boys Basketball Team (24-9) won the MHSAA 7A State Championship with a 54-50 win over Clinton (23-7) at the Mississippi Coliseum on March 2, 2024, and MHSAA's first 7A Boys title after the new classification was added at the start of the 2023-2024 school year; and

WHEREAS, "I honestly wanted this so bad for our players," Coach Ronald Norman (whose team won the State Championship in 2017) said.  "...For me, this is just like the first time.  But I'm gonna enjoy every moment that I can and every opportunity that I get to come back"; and

WHEREAS, Meridian led during every minute of the championship game until a jump shot by Clinton that gave the Arrows a 43-42 advantage.  Norman said there was one player to keep his team level-headed in the final minutes - Javion Yarbrough; and

WHEREAS, this particular Meridian team has a saying, "Family on three, 'Wildcats' on six, gold ball on nine."  The creators were Yarbrough and the teammates he grew up playing with in search of winning a state title; and

WHEREAS, the 2023-24 Championship "Wildcats" roster is:  Amarie Carter, Jordan Jones, Jorden Harbour, DJ Johnson, Tony Dunnigan, Jontae Richey, JR Yarbrough, Adrian Davis, Joe Horne, William Hodges, Terran Westerfield, Demonta Powe, William Davidson, Deontae Hopper, Mequin Curry, Josh Randolph, Lakahan Brookins, Josh Jones and Head Coach Ronald Norman; and

WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize these student athletes who have brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Meridian High School "Wildcats" Boys Basketball Team and Head Coach Ronald Norman for winning the first MHSAA 7A State Championship, and extend to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors our best wishes for future success.
