HOUSE BILL NO. 5531

A bill to amend 1978 PA 368, entitled

"Public health code,"

(MCL 333.1101 to 333.25211) by adding section 2620.

the people of the state of michigan enact:

Sec. 2620. (1) The department shall establish a registry to record the occurrences of a student death in this state.

(2) Each student death in this state shall be reported to the department as provided under subsection (4).

(3) The department shall maintain comprehensive records of all reports submitted under this section. The reports are subject to the same requirements of confidentiality as provided in section 2631.

(4) The department shall promulgate rules that do both of the following:

(a) Provide the manner in which a student death will be reported under subsection (2).

(b) The information that must be included in the report of a student death under subsection (2), including, but not limited to, the cause of death.

(5) The department shall evaluate the reports provided under subsection (2). Beginning August 1, 2025, the department shall publish and make available to the public records summarizing the information collected under this section.

(6) As used in this section:

(a) "School property" means a building, playing field, or property used for school purposes to impart instruction to children or used for functions and events sponsored by a school, except a building used primarily for adult education or college extension courses.

(b) "Student death" means the death of a child that occurs on school property.
