SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 164
Commending Friends of Fairfax Station.

 

Agreed to by the Senate, March 8, 2024

 

WHEREAS, for 50 years, Friends of Fairfax Station has served the community by maintaining and operating the former Fairfax Station Railroad Museum, which preserves and interprets the region's rich history; and

WHEREAS, when the Fairfax Station Railroad Depot closed in 1973, it was the last operating railroad depot in Fairfax County; a group of local citizens worked to preserve the site for use as a museum; and

WHEREAS, led by Lena Wyckoff, a former educator who grew up in a railroading family, and the Clifton Community Woman's Club, the Friends of Fairfax Station was founded later that year and was supported by Southern Railway, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, the Fairfax County Vocational Education Foundation, and members of the Fried and Moore families; and

WHEREAS, the Friends of Fairfax Station successfully remodeled and reopened the property at the Fairfax Station Railroad Museum in 1987; and

WHEREAS, the Fairfax Station area is rich in history related to the Civil War and the railroad industry, and the Friends of Fairfax Station and the Fairfax Station Railroad Museum have fostered a greater appreciation and understanding of that history through engaging programs, displays, and special exhibits; and

WHEREAS, the Fairfax Station Railroad Museum is the only non-park site that participates in the National Park Service's Traveling Clara Barton program, which is aimed at helping younger visitors learn more about the Civil War; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate of Virginia, That Friends of Fairfax Station hereby be commended on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Friends of Fairfax Station as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's admiration for the Fairfax Station Railroad Museum's contributions to education and historical preservation in the area.
