WHEREAS, Phyllis Hatcher, an educator and a woman of deep faith who enhanced cultural life in Wise County through her generous servant-leadership, died on December 10, 2023; and
WHEREAS, Phyllis Hatcher grew up in Wise and worked for the U.S. Forest Service in the region while she earned a bachelor's degree from Clinch Valley College; and
WHEREAS, Phyllis Hatcher received a master's degree from the University of Virginia and began a long and fulfilling career as a teacher in 1975; for more than three decades, she taught language arts in public schools and participated in Upward Bound summer programs to help students prepare for higher education; and
WHEREAS, after her well-earned retirement as an educator, Phyllis Hatcher continued to serve as a substitute teacher, tutor, and youth mentor; and
WHEREAS, throughout her life, Phyllis Hatcher was guided by her faith, and her bookmarked and well-worn Bible was always on her bedside; she had many church homes, from Hurricane Baptist Church to Norton United Methodist Church, where she built cherished friendships; and
WHEREAS, Phyllis Hatcher enhanced community life through her volunteer leadership and her passion for the arts; she played an instrumental role in bringing the Pro-Art Association to Wise County and supported the Symphony of the Mountains and the Barter Theatre; and
WHEREAS, Phyllis Hatcher provided her wisdom and expertise to many other local organizations, and she was a loyal alumna of Clinch Valley College, serving as president of its alumni association; and
WHEREAS, Phyllis Hatcher was well known for her legendary parties and holiday gatherings, and her home was often filled with warmth, laughter, and the aromas of her delicious meals; and
WHEREAS, predeceased by her first husband, Jack, Phyllis Hatcher will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by her husband of 31 years, Lu; her children, Scott and Hunter, and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of Virginia hereby note with great sadness the loss of Phyllis Hatcher; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Phyllis Hatcher as an expression of the Senate of Virginia's respect for her memory.
