SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 91
Commending Virginia's forest products industry.

WHEREAS, Virginia's forest products industry is the third largest private sector industry in the Commonwealth and makes essential contributions to the vitality of the overall economy and good stewardship of the environment, while promoting a high quality of life for all Virginians; and

WHEREAS, Virginia's forest products industry generates $23.6 billion in goods and services annually and employs more than 108,000 people in approximately 1,500 facilities across the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, Virginia's forest products industry promotes the planting and maintenance of forested land, and the Commonwealth's Forest Products Tax helps fund reforestation efforts; and

WHEREAS, Virginia's 16 million acres of forested land provide environmental benefits by cleaning the air and purifying the water and facilitate diverse recreational opportunities for the residents of the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, Virginia's sustainable forest resources are critical to the Commonwealth's environmental integrity, economic viability, and quality of life in both rural and urban areas; and

WHEREAS, products from privately-owned forests serve diverse end markets and provide critical sources of revenue that enable 400,000 landowners to protect and manage their forests; and

WHEREAS, these privately-owned and managed forests provide habitat, carbon sequestration, and renewable energy, in addition to countless products that Virginians use every day; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Virginia's forest products industry, one of the oldest, largest, and most important private sector industries in the Commonwealth; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Ron Jenkins, executive director, and Frank Myers, board president of the Virginia Loggers Association, as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the important contributions of Virginia's forest products industry to all Virginians.
