SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 240
Commending the McLean High School journalism program.

WHEREAS, the McLean High School journalism program received the First Amendment Press Freedom Award from the Journalism Education Association in 2024; and

WHEREAS, the McLean High School journalism program was one of three Fairfax County schools and one of 28 schools nationwide to receive the First Amendment Press Freedom Award, which recognizes schools that actively promote an understanding of the First Amendment rights and responsibilities of students and teachers, particularly by supporting an independent student-run media; and

WHEREAS, the McLean High School journalism program's most recent First Amendment Press Freedom Award marks the seventh consecutive time the program has received this prestigious honor; and

WHEREAS, the McLean High School journalism program produces The Highlander, a student-run news magazine providing coverage of news and community events, as well as other features, that are of interest to McLean High School's students, faculty, and families and the wider McLean community; and

WHEREAS, the McLean High School journalism program will be officially presented with the First Amendment Press Freedom Award at the Journalism Education Association–National Scholastic Press Association's national high school journalism convention in April 2024; and

WHEREAS, the accomplishments of the McLean High School journalism program are the result of the hard work and dedication of the student-journalists, the leadership and guidance of their teachers, and the unwavering support of their families and the entire McLean High School community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the McLean High School journalism program for receiving the 2024 First Amendment Press Freedom Award; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the McLean High School journalism program as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for the program's achievements.
