SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 181
Commending Michael F. Murn.

WHEREAS, in December 2023, Michael F. Murn retired as a senior police officer with Herndon Police Department after 16 years of service to the Herndon community and more than four decades as a law-enforcement officer; and

WHEREAS, Michael Murn previously served as a law-enforcement officer in Fairfax County for 25 years, then joined the Herndon Police Department on August 13, 2007; and

WHEREAS, Michael Murn engaged with community members to cultivate positive interactions with law enforcement and built strong relationships based on trust and mutual respect with members of the public; and

WHEREAS, in August 2017, Michael Murn was selected as Herndon's first school resource officer and was assigned to both Herndon High School and Herndon Middle School; he went above and beyond his duties to ensure the safety and security of the school community and was a beneficial influence in the lives of many young people; and

WHEREAS, Michael Murn safeguarded school dances, fundraisers, parent meetings, food drives, and sporting events; he participated in summer camps to stay engaged with students throughout the year and often rode the bus at the beginning of the school year to help new students feel comfortable; and

WHEREAS, Michael Murn facilitated traffic safety and met regularly with school counselors to identify students in need of transportation to after-school programs or places of employment; and

WHEREAS, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Michael Murn helped families in need receive assistance and support, driving counselors, teachers, and information technology staff to students' homes to address a wide range of issues; and

WHEREAS, Michael Murn also played a critical role in the establishment of Herndon's Project Hope programs, after-school clubs that help build trust between elementary school students from immigrant families and police officers; and

WHEREAS, through Project Hope, Michael Murn fostered understanding with children through social activities, helping at-risk youths avoid destructive behaviors, while giving others an opportunity to help serve as role models for their peers; and

WHEREAS, in addition to his work in Fairfax County Public Schools, Michael Murn provided security and threat assessments to Saint Joseph's Catholic School and participated in fundraising events for Herndon United Methodist Church and Dranesville Baptist Church; and

WHEREAS, throughout his career, Michael Murn developed deep bonds with members of the community, and in 2020 he was honored to be recognized as "A True American Hero" by Webelos Den 1, Pack 913 of the Boy Scouts of America; and

WHEREAS, Michael Murn earned the respect and admiration of his colleagues for his high character, personal integrity, enthusiasm for his work, and commitment to service; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend Michael F. Murn on the occasion of his retirement from the Herndon Police Department; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Michael F. Murn as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for his legacy of contributions to the Herndon community and best wishes on a well-earned retirement.
