SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 175
Commending the Broad Run High School football team.

WHEREAS, the Broad Run High School football team finished an outstanding season by winning the Group AA, Division 4 state championship on December 12, 2009; and

WHEREAS, the Broad Run High School Spartans (14–0) clinched their second straight state title in a game played at Virginia Tech's Lane Stadium in Blacksburg; the Spartans secured the win in an exciting 21–16 victory over Amherst High School; and

WHEREAS, sophomore Spartans quarterback Connor Jessop, younger brother of quarterback Chris Jessop, who led the Spartans to the 2008 state championship, connected for three touchdowns to lead the Spartans to victory; and

WHEREAS, when the Lancers fumbled in the second quarter, the Spartans ran the ball 67 yards and senior Adrian Flemming caught a 12-yard throw in the end zone to put the Spartans on the scoreboard; and

WHEREAS, the Spartans scored again in the third quarter when Derril Thomas made it into the end zone, while the game-winning touchdown came from David Weaver with a little over eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter; and

WHEREAS, Broad Run High School's strong defense forced turnovers on four of Amherst High School's first five possessions and held the Amherst High School Lancers to just two touchdowns during the entire game; and

WHEREAS, showing great versatility and talent, the entire team worked diligently throughout the season to defeat their opponents and take home the championship title; the Spartans have dominated Group AA, Division 4 football for the past two years, winning 38 of their last 39 games; and

WHEREAS, the triumphant performance of the 2009 Spartans football team is a tribute to the talent, dedication, and perseverance of the players; the leadership of Head Coach Mike Burnett and his staff; and the support of the students and faculty of Broad Run High School; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Broad Run High School football team for its state championship win; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Mike Burnett as an expression of the General Assembly's congratulations for the team's outstanding season and championship performance.
