SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 124
Commending George Teague, Jr.

WHEREAS, in 2022, George Teague, Jr., a native of Accomack County and an accomplished owner, trainer, and driver in the sport of harness horse racing, was inducted into the Harness Racing Museum's Living Hall of Fame; and

WHEREAS, George Teague was born in Melfa and learned about harness horse racing at a young age from his parents, who worked as horse trainers at the Keller Fair Grounds; and

WHEREAS, in 1976, George Teague and his family settled in Harrington, Delaware, where he and his sister, Brenda, have now been training and racing horses at Teague Stables for decades; and

WHEREAS, throughout his career, George Teague has earned respect and admiration for his humility, professionalism, and incomparable work ethic, and has garnered a reputation for a keen eye when it comes to picking horses with championship potential; and

WHEREAS, George Teague campaigned with some of the top harness racing horses of the 21st century, including the 2004 Horse of the Year, Rainbow Blue, who won 30 of her 32 lifetime starts; Total Truth, the 2006 Pacer of the Year and winner of the North America Cup; and Wiggle It Jiggleit, who was named the 2015 Horse of the Year after winning 22 of 26 starts; and

WHEREAS, Team Teague also campaigned with Lather Up, the 2018 North America Cup and world champion who later equaled the 1:46 record for the fastest mile ever; and

WHEREAS, George Teague broke down barriers as one of the few prominent Black members of the harness horse racing community, and he earned numerous awards and accolades over the course of his career; and

WHEREAS, George Teague received the William R. Haughton Good Guy Award in 2004 and 2016, the Dominic Frinzi Person of the Year Award from Harness Horse International in 2016, and the Stan Bergstein Proximity Award, the highest honor given by the United States Harness Writers Association, in 2016; and

WHEREAS, George Teague enjoys the love and support of his wife, Joy; his son, Montrell; and his stepdaughters, Shanika and Shamika in all his endeavors; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend George Teague, Jr., on his induction into the Harness Racing Museum's Living Hall of Fame in 2022; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to George Teague, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for his incredible achievements and contributions to harness horse racing.
