WHEREAS, Dr. Verletta White, superintendent of Roanoke City Public Schools, was named Virginia Superintendent of the Year by the Virginia Association of School Superintendents at the organization's annual conference on April 24, 2023; and

WHEREAS, Verletta White was formerly an educator and education administrator in her hometown of Baltimore County, Maryland, and earned a doctorate in urban educational leadership from Morgan State University before taking the helm of Roanoke City Public Schools (RCPS) in July 2020; and

WHEREAS, a selection committee of the Virginia Association of School Superintendents (VASS), including VASS officers and the leaders of several major education organizations in the Commonwealth, recognized Verletta White for her unwavering dedication to the success of her students; and

WHEREAS, Verletta White's notable accomplishments as superintendent include narrowing post-pandemic learning gaps, accelerating the reading growth of nonnative students who are English learners, and promoting students' physical, social, and emotional well-being by fostering community between students, staff, and families; and

WHEREAS, Verletta White has spearheaded recent endeavors in the area of career technical education that have increased student enrollment and enhanced workforce development efforts, creating greater opportunities for students to earn a degree and acquire marketable skills and experience; and

WHEREAS, Verletta White was additionally recognized by the Virginia Parent Teacher Association in 2023 as its Superintendent Power Partner of the Year for her efforts to promote excellence in her schools and to be accessible to students, staff, families, and the community; and

WHEREAS, through compassionate leadership and a heartfelt commitment to her mission, Verletta White has lifted RCPS and its students, making Roanoke a more wonderful place to live, work, and raise a family; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That Dr. Verletta White, superintendent of Roanoke City Public Schools, hereby be commended for being named the Virginia Association of School Superintendents' 2023 Virginia Superintendent of the Year; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Dr. Verletta White as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for her contributions to education in the Commonwealth.
