HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 444
Commending the Creative and Performing Arts Center.
 
Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 8, 2024
 

WHEREAS, the Creative and Performing Arts Center, a nonprofit dedicated to bridging creative and performing arts opportunity gaps for underinvested communities in Prince William County, celebrates its 20th anniversary in 2024; and

WHEREAS, the mission of the Creative and Performing Arts Center (CAPAC) is to provide underrepresented youth and adults with educational opportunities in theater and in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines to promote problem-solving, collaboration, and leadership skills; and

WHEREAS, formally established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2004, CAPAC grew out of an exploratory committee that held many discussions with area artists, parents, educators, and community leaders in 2002 about how to close the achievement gap in the creative and performing arts in Prince William County; and

WHEREAS, CAPAC carries out its vision by offering greater opportunities for youth and adults of color to act, direct theatrical productions written by African American playwrights, and provide arts educational programming; and

WHEREAS, CAPAC's endeavors to date have included 25 theatrical productions featuring more than 1,600 performers of all ages that were attended by more than 10,000 members of the community; and

WHEREAS, in 2021, with the support of several partner organizations, CAPAC launched Full STEAM Ahead: A Theater Robotics Summer Day Camp, which provides Prince William County students ages 11 to 14 at Title 1 schools a unique and engaging educational experience; and

WHEREAS, CAPAC's efforts to cultivate an interest in theater and STEM disciplines and to close the achievement gap in those fields is worthy of the esteem and admiration of all Virginians; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Creative and Performing Arts Center hereby be commended for its legacy of accomplishments in service to students of Prince William County Public Schools; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Creative and Performing Arts Center as an expression of the House of Delegates' high regard for the organization's contributions to Prince William County and the Commonwealth.
