HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 239
Commending the Nantucket-Treweryn Beagles.

Agreed to by the House of Delegates, March 4, 2024

WHEREAS, the Nantucket-Treweryn Beagles, a beagle hunting pack based at the historic Institute Farm in Aldie, celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2024; and

WHEREAS, the Nantucket-Treweryn Beagles trace their origins to the Treweryn Beagles in Pennsylvania, founded in 1924 and led by master David B. Sharp, Jr., and the Nantucket Harriers of Massachusetts, founded in 1926 and led by master Rebecca Lanier Trimpi; and

WHEREAS, following the marriage of David Sharp and Rebecca Trimpi in 1964, the Treweryn Beagles and Nantucket Harriers were merged to form the Nantucket-Treweryn Beagles, which were ultimately relocated to Middleburg; and

WHEREAS, David and Rebecca Sharp, who are notably the only Americans to ever judge beagles at the prestigious Peterborough Royal Foxhound Show in Britain, are regarded as legends in the sport of beagling, in large part as a result of their leadership of the Nantucket-Treweryn Beagles; and

WHEREAS, today, the Nantucket-Treweryn Beagles is a subscription pack owned by the Nantucket-Treweryn Corporation, which regularly has approximately 35 beagle hounds supported by more than 80 members; and

WHEREAS, from October through March, the Nantucket-Treweryn Beagles hunt every Sunday and on occasional bye days on various plots in and around Clarke County; and

WHEREAS, the Nantucket-Treweryn Beagles have in recent years been led by masters Peter Cook, Frederic Underwood, Marianne Casey, and Russell Wagner, who have organized the group's hunting schedule and other events and taken great care to ensure enjoyable hunts for all participants; and

WHEREAS, the Nantucket-Treweryn Beagles are a distinguished member of the National Beagle Club of America, the national governing body of the sport of beagling; and

WHEREAS, throughout its history, the masters, staff, members, and subscribers of the Nantucket-Treweryn Beagles have been ardent supporters of land preservation and conservation efforts in Clarke County and beyond, contributing to the enduring beauty and bucolic character of the region; and

WHEREAS, as an exemplar of the sport of beagling, a time-honored tradition in Virginia, the Nantucket-Treweryn Beagles represent an important thread in the cultural fabric of the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Nantucket-Treweryn Beagles hereby be commended on the occasion of the pack's 100th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to representatives of the Nantucket-Treweryn Beagles as an expression of the House of Delegates' admiration for the pack's history and contributions to the Commonwealth.
