HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 478
Celebrating the life of Sergeant Lawrence G. "J.R." Sprader, Jr., United States Army.

WHEREAS, United States Army Sergeant Lawrence G. Sprader, Jr., died during a field training exercise conducted by the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Warrior Leader Course, at Fort Hood, Texas, on June 12, 2007; and

WHEREAS, Lawrence G. Sprader, Jr., was known affectionately by his family, friends, and fellow soldiers as "J.R."; and

WHEREAS, the youngest son of SFC Lawrence Sprader, USA (RET), and Pok Sun Sprader, J.R. Sprader was a native son of Virginia, who was born at Fort Belvoir and graduated from Prince George High School on June 16, 2000; and

WHEREAS, just days after graduation, J.R. Sprader enlisted in the United States Army on July 28, 2000, and, upon completion of Basic Training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, and Advanced Individual and Specialist Training at Fort Lee, Virginia, Private Sprader served with Company A, 84th Chemical Company, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, from March 2001 to July 2002; and

WHEREAS, Specialist Four Sprader served with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, First Battalion, Twenty-Fifth Infantry, First Infantry Division, Schweinfurt, Germany, from July 2002 to July 2005; and

WHEREAS, Specialist Four Sprader was deployed to Forward Operating Base Brassfield/Mora, in Samarra, Iraq, during Operation Iraqi Freedom II, from February 2004 to February 2005; and

WHEREAS, Specialist Four Sprader served from July 2005 to March 2007 with the 506th Quartermaster Company, based at Fort Lee, Virginia, during which tour he deployed to Forward Operating Base (FOB) Speicher, in Tikrit, Iraq, from October 18, 2005, to October 8, 2006; and

WHEREAS, on April 1, 2006, while deployed to FOB Speicher, J.R. Sprader was promoted to Sergeant, United States Army; and

WHEREAS, in April 2007, Sergeant Sprader was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, 11th Military Police Battalion (CID), 6th Military Police Group, Fort Hood, Texas; and

WHEREAS, in just under seven years of honorable and exemplary service in the United States Army, Sergeant J.R. Sprader amassed a superlative performance record; his personal awards and decorations included the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal (2nd), National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Combat Lifesaver Badge, First Class Driver's Badge, and Second Class Driver's Badge; and

WHEREAS, at the time of his death, Sergeant Sprader was preparing for his third deployment to Iraq, and although he did not die in a combat area or as a result of hostile enemy action, J.R Sprader's death is a poignant reminder of the difficult, demanding, and dangerous nature of military service and the perils faced daily by the valiant and patriotic Americans who serve in our armed forces both at home and overseas, in wartime and peacetime, and in training as well as operational assignments, whose devotion to duty routinely places them in harm's way, and in whose profound debt we each remain for our liberty, prosperity, and security; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a courageous and patriotic American, Sergeant Lawrence G. Sprader, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Sergeant Lawrence G. Sprader, Jr., as an expression of the high esteem in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
