HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 407
Commending the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, Lambda Omega Chapter.

WHEREAS, for 90 years, the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, Lambda Omega Chapter has cultivated fellowship among its members while working together to address the needs of the community; and

WHEREAS, the Lambda Omega Chapter was chartered in Newport News on January 13, 1934, with the help of other sorority members who lived in Newport News and Hampton; and

WHEREAS, among many notable achievements, the Lambda Omega Chapter played an instrumental role in having the "white" and "colored" signs removed from the restrooms at Nachman's Department Store and supported economic development in the area by supporting Black-owned businesses; and

WHEREAS, in 2015, former Lambda Omega Chapter member Katherine G. Johnson received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama for her role as a scientist and mathematician at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration; and

WHEREAS, other prominent members of the Lambda Omega Chapter include educator Leah K. Frazier, the first Black woman mayor of Newport News Jessie Rattley, former Mid-Atlantic regional director Clara M. Hines, civil rights activist Flora D. Crittenden, and former member of the Virginia House of Delegates Mamye E. BaCote; and

WHEREAS, over the course of its history, the Lambda Omega Chapter has hosted several Mid-Atlantic Regional Conferences, Founders' Day Ceremonies, and Tidewater Cluster Meetings; the chapter has sponsored health and empowerment fairs, educational programs, seminars, and workshops for members and the community; and

WHEREAS, having maintained a membership of more than 100 women through the years, the Lambda Omega Chapter continues to perpetuate the ideals and principles of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority through service in local communities, across the nation, and around the world; and

WHEREAS, as the Lambda Omega Chapter celebrates 90 years of sisterhood and service in 2024, its members will remain focused on improving educational, social, cultural, and economic conditions on the Virginia Peninsula and beyond, while aspiring to promote the sorority's mission to be of "Service to all Mankind"; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, Lambda Omega Chapter on the occasion of its 90th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated®, Lambda Omega Chapter as an expression of the General Assembly's admiration for its members' legacy of achievements.
