HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 199
Celebrating the life of Technical Sergeant Phillip Myers.

WHEREAS, United States Air Force Technical Sergeant Phillip Myers of Hopewell was killed in the line of duty on April 4, 2009, while valiantly serving his country in Afghanistan; and

WHEREAS, Phillip Myers grew up in the Hopewell area, graduated from Hopewell High School in 1996, and joined the United States Air Force in 1999; and

WHEREAS, Technical Sergeant Myers was a highly trained Air Force explosive ordnance technician assigned to the 48th Civil Engineer Squadron with the Royal Air Force in Lakenheath, England; and

WHEREAS, a dedicated airman, Technical Sergeant Myers received many honors, including the Purple Heart and was awarded the Bronze Star twice in his military career, including on March 19, 2008, when he was presented the special honor by Lt. General Robert D. Bishop, Jr., for his brave service in Iraq; and

WHEREAS, Technical Sergeant Myers, age 30, died from wounds suffered in a roadside bombing near Helmand province in Afghanistan while conducting a mission in support of Operation Enduring Freedom; and

WHEREAS, the family graciously granted permission and officials allowed the media to chronicle the dignified ceremony of a fallen soldier returning to Dover Air Force Base for the first time since 1991; on April 6, 2009, Technical Sergeant Myers' flag-draped coffin was solemnly transferred to a waiting hearse by fellow warriors; he was laid to rest in a service with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery on April 27, 2009; and

WHEREAS, Phillip Myers was devoted to his loving wife, Aimee Myers; his daughter, Dakotah Myers, and son, Kaiden Myers; his mother, Treasa Hamilton, and husband Jeff Hamilton; his father, Eddie Myers, and brother, Sean Myers; his grandparents; and many other family members and friends; and

WHEREAS, Technical Sergeant Myers' death is a reminder of the perils faced daily by the thousands of Americans who serve in our armed forces overseas and whose devotion to duty places them in harm's way; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a courageous and patriotic Virginian, Technical Sergeant Phillip Myers; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Technical Sergeant Phillip Myers as an expression of the high regard in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of Virginia.
