Be it enacted by the General Assembly of Virginia:

1. §1. That the Department of Social Services shall develop a pilot program for diabetes self-care education for individuals and families receiving public assistance, to promote informed decision-making, self-care behaviors, and active collaboration with health care providers and to improve clinical outcomes, health status, and quality of life for individuals with diabetes and to reduce the cost of publicly funded medical assistance for individuals with diabetes. Such program shall be evidence-based and shall include education about diet, exercise, monitoring, medication compliance, healthy coping, and other self-care behaviors related to diabetes management. In developing the program, the Department shall consider similar programs recognized by the Education Recognition Program of the American Diabetes Association.
