| WHEREAS, Washington Irving Dual Language Academy, a | ||
| charter school in the San Antonio Independent School District, is | ||
| celebrating the 100th anniversary of its founding in 2023; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Irving Academy was founded in 1923 and named after | ||
| Washington Irving, a 19th century American author; it was | ||
| established as one of San Antonio ISD's original eight junior | ||
| high schools, and classes were initially held at Crockett | ||
| Elementary before the Irving Junior High School building | ||
| officially opened in January 1924; and | ||
| WHEREAS, In 1973, Irving Academy moved to its present | ||
| location on Delgado Street; a new band and mariachi hall was | ||
| added in 2003 as part of a facilities expansion bond program, and | ||
| the campus has since offered classes in band, mariachi, choir, | ||
| and art, alongside dual language instruction, gifted and | ||
| talented programming, special education programming, and | ||
| guidance services for eligible students; and | ||
| WHEREAS, Today, Washington Irving Dual Language Academy | ||
| encompasses prekindergarten through eighth grade classes; its | ||
| faculty members are committed to cultivating a safe and nurturing | ||
| learning environment that empowers students to excel | ||
| academically while acquiring language proficiency in both | ||
| English and Spanish; and | ||
| WHEREAS, For a century, Washington Irving Dual Language | ||
| Academy has provided young Texans with a solid educational | ||
| foundation that enables them to reach their full potential and | ||
| become productive and engaged members of their communities, and | ||
| it is a privilege to join in celebrating this special milestone | ||
| in the school's history; now, therefore, be it | ||
| RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 88th | ||
| Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby honor Washington Irving | ||
| Dual Language Academy on its centennial and extend to its | ||
| administrators, faculty, staff, and students sincere best wishes | ||
| for continued success; and, be it further | ||
| RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be | ||
| prepared for the school as an expression of high regard from the | ||
| Texas Senate. | ||
