R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, Dr. Veronica Estrada, of the College of Education at
  The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, was presented an
  inaugural McGraw Hill Distinguished Scholar Award at the Conference
  on Academic Research in Education held in Las Vegas on January 30,
  2017; and
         WHEREAS, After earning a bachelor's degree in English at
  St. Mary's University in 1988, Dr. Estrada did graduate work at The
  Ohio State University, where she received an M.A. in English in 1990
  and both an M.A. and a Ph.D. in education studies in 1997; and
         WHEREAS, Dr. Estrada joined the Department of Curriculum and
  Instruction of what was then The University of Texas--Pan American
  as a lecturer in 1996, and she has steadily risen through the ranks,
  becoming an assistant professor in 1998, associate professor in
  2004, and full professor in 2010; she has also served the university
  as department chair and interim associate dean for Undergraduate
  Studies and Teacher Education, and she is currently the program
  coordinator for the Secondary/All-Level Teacher Preparation
  Program; and
         WHEREAS, The McGraw Hill award was conferred on Dr. Estrada
  in recognition of her long record of exemplary scholarship; the
  author or coauthor of more than 25 journal articles and book
  chapters, she has cowritten a book, Classroom Connections to
  Teaching: A Resource for Teachers of Latino Students, and she has
  made over 80 conference presentations; and
         WHEREAS, For more than 20 years, this gifted teacher and
  scholar has contributed to the advancement of her discipline and
  the vitality of her department, and she may indeed take great pride
  in this prestigious recognition from her academic peers; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 85th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Veronica Estrada on her
  receipt of an inaugural McGraw Hill Distinguished Scholar Award and
  extend to her sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it
  further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Dr. Estrada as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
