R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, The State of Texas lost an accomplished veteran,
  respected businesswoman, and dedicated civic leader with the death
  of Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Deborah L. Van Dormolen of Salado on
  March 11, 2013, at the age of 60; and
         WHEREAS, A graduate of West Chester State College in
  Pennsylvania, "Borah" Van Dormolen enlisted in the United States
  Army in 1974, thus beginning a distinguished military career that
  spanned 23 years; during her service in the armed forces, Colonel
  Van Dormolen held faculty, staff, and command positions in both the
  United States and the Federal Republic of Germany; along the way,
  she earned a master's degree in physical education from Indiana
  University and completed the Signal Officer Basic and Advanced
  courses from the Command and General Staff College; and
         WHEREAS, Colonel Van Dormolen taught at the U.S. Military
  Academy at West Point and served as commander of logistics
  operations units for the army's largest military formations,
  including the famed 1st Cavalry Division; in her final assignment,
  she served as the assistant chief of staff materiel for the 13th
  Corps Support Command at Fort Hood; and
         WHEREAS, In recognition of her outstanding professional
  performance, she received numerous military decorations, including
  the Legion of Merit, four Meritorious Service Medals, two Army
  Commendation Medals, and two Army Achievement Medals; moreover, she
  was named the 2010 Distinguished Military Retiree for Texas by the
  Fort Hood Retiree Council for her continuing contributions to the
  community, military retirees, and the families of service members;
  in addition, she served as vice president of the Texas Council of
  Chapters of the Military Officers Association of America, served as
  president and director of the Central Texas Chapter of the MOAA, and
  sat on the board of governors for the Association of the United
  States Army, Fort Hood Chapter; and
         WHEREAS, In all her endeavors, Borah Van Dormolen enjoyed the
  love and support of her husband of more than a quarter-century,
  Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.) Rich Castle; following her retirement
  from the military in 1997, the pair established a successful
  business, Design Technology Group, Inc., which manufactures and
  markets outdoor stainless steel electric grills; and
         WHEREAS, Colonel Van Dormolen enthusiastically served in
  myriad leadership positions in the Republican Party; she was chief
  of staff for Representative Kent Grusendorf during the 77th Texas
  Legislature, and she gave generously of her time and talents to the
  Republican Party of Bell County; she also served the Texas
  Federation of Republican Women as president, vice president of
  finance, vice president of legislation, and leadership development
  chair; a mentor to many, she conducted campaign management seminars
  for both the TFRW and the National Federation of Republican Women
  and served on the executive committee of Maggie's List, a political
  action committee that helps recruit and train women running for
  congressional office; at her passing, she was serving a second term
  as the Republican National Committeewoman from Texas, and she had
  recently been elected to represent the Lone Star State on the Rules
  Committee of the Republican National Committee; and
         WHEREAS, In addition to her extensive efforts as an advocate
  for members of the armed forces and as a political activist, Colonel
  Van Dormolen held a gubernatorial appointment to the Texas State
  Cemetery Committee and was a member of the Salado Rotary Club; she
  was an endowment member of the National Rifle Association and the
  Texas State Rifle Association, and she was a former member of the
  board of directors for the Mill Creek Golf and Country Club and for
  the Central Texas Women's Golf Association; and
         WHEREAS, An exemplary officer and engaged citizen, Borah Van
  Dormolen will be deeply missed, but her patriotism, energy, and
  wisdom will forever inspire all who had the good fortune to know
  her; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Deborah L. Van
  Dormolen and extend sincere sympathy to her husband, Lieutenant
  Colonel (Ret.) Rich Castle, and to her other relatives and many
  friends; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Borah Van
  Dormolen.
