| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Urging proper disposal of expired, unused and unwanted |
2 | prescription drugs. |
3 | WHEREAS, The Senate notes the serious public health and |
4 | safety issues associated with improper disposal of unused |
5 | medications, including abuse, accidental ingestion and |
6 | environmental hazards; and |
7 | WHEREAS, The Senate acknowledges the growing need for safe, |
8 | legal and environmentally friendly disposal of unused |
9 | medications; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Safe disposal is essential for curbing the alarming |
11 | increase of prescription drug abuse in our communities; and |
12 | WHEREAS, Abuse of prescription drugs by teenagers and young |
13 | adults is increasingly prevalent; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Prescription drugs are involved in more overdose |
15 | deaths than illegal drugs; and |
16 | WHEREAS, Medications which are no longer indicated or |
17 | prescribed may cause adverse drug interactions; and |
18 | WHEREAS, Active pharmaceutical ingredients are sources of |

1 | environmental contamination; and |
2 | WHEREAS, Some pharmacies and local governments have drug |
3 | disposal programs in place; and |
4 | WHEREAS, The United States Postal Service and the United |
5 | States Department of Veterans Affairs are joining for a limited |
6 | mail-back program for safe disposal of veterans' unused |
7 | medication; and |
8 | WHEREAS, Tons of drugs were collected in a recent nationwide |
9 | prescription drug take-back program administered by the United |
10 | States Drug Enforcement Administration in conjunction with state |
11 | Attorneys General and local law enforcement agencies; and |
12 | WHEREAS, The Senate requests that consumers seek available |
13 | collection or take-back programs; therefore be it |
14 | RESOLVED, That the Senate urge proper disposal of expired, |
15 | unused and unwanted prescription drugs in our Commonwealth. |
