| AN ACT |
| |
1 | Designating the interchange at Exit 32-B of Interstate 70 in |
2 | Washington County as the Nathan Burnfield Memorial |
3 | Interchange; and designating the Gay Street Bridge on State | <-- |
4 | Route 113, which crosses French Creek in the Borough of |
5 | Phoenixville, Chester County, as the Veterans Memorial Gay |
6 | Street Bridge. |
7 | The General Assembly finds and declares as follows: |
8 | (1) Attaining the rank of first lieutenant with the |
9 | Canton Volunteer Fire Department in Washington County, Nathan |
10 | Burnfield committed himself to public service within the |
11 | community as a firefighter for six years. |
12 | (2) Nathan Burnfield continued his public service as a |
13 | police officer for South Strabane Township, Washington |
14 | County, where he served as the CPR instructor and the arson |
15 | investigator for the department for five years, in addition |

1 | to his duties as a firefighter. |
2 | (3) On November 4, 2008, Officer Burnfield was off duty |
3 | and traveling with two other officers returning from three |
4 | days of police training at the California University of |
5 | Pennsylvania when they stopped to remove a truck wheel and |
6 | tire that were blocking lanes on Interstate 70, near the |
7 | Bentleyville exit. |
8 | (4) As Officer Burnfield cleared the wheel and tire from |
9 | the roadway, he was struck by a dump truck that could not |
10 | stop in time and he subsequently died at 27 years of age. |
11 | (5) Nathan Burnfield will be remembered for his devotion |
12 | to duty and his remarkable dedication to the citizens of |
13 | South Strabane Township and Canton Township. |
14 | The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania |
15 | hereby enacts as follows: |
16 | Section 1. Nathan Burnfield Memorial Interchange at Exit 32-B |
17 | (Bentleyville) of Interstate 70 in Washington County. |
18 | (a) Designation.--Exit 32-B (Bentleyville) of Interstate 70 |
19 | in Washington County, in both directions, is hereby designated |
20 | as the Nathan Burnfield Memorial Interchange. |
21 | (b) Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall, in |
22 | appropriate locations, erect and maintain signs displaying the |
23 | name designated under subsection (a). |
24 | Section 2. Veterans Memorial Gay Street Bridge. | <-- |
25 | (a) Designation.--The Gay Street Bridge which crosses French |
26 | Creek on State Route 113 in Phoenixville Borough, Chester |
27 | County, is hereby designated as the Veterans Memorial Gay Street |
28 | Bridge. |
29 | (b) Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall erect and |
30 | maintain appropriate signs to indicate the designation under |

1 | subsection (a) in both directions. |
2 | Section 2 3. Effective date. | <-- |
3 | This act shall take effect in 60 days. |
