A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
To declare November 2013 as "Pancreatic Cancer 1
Awareness Month."2


BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF OHIO
(THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING):


       WHEREAS, Pancreatic cancer is one of the most deadly cancers. 3
In 2013, an estimated 45,000 people in the United States will be 4
diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and more than 38,000 will die 5
from the disease; and6

       WHEREAS, Pancreatic cancer is the fourth leading cause of 7
cancer death in the United States. It is the only major cancer 8
with a five-year survival rate of just six per cent; and9

       WHEREAS, In 2013, approximately 1,600 Ohioans will die from 10
pancreatic cancer; and11

       WHEREAS, Symptoms of pancreatic cancer often do not occur 12
until the cancer is at an advanced stage. Approximately 13
seventy-three per cent of pancreatic cancer patients die within 14
the first year of diagnosis and ninety-four per cent of patients 15
die within the first five years of diagnosis; and16

       WHEREAS, The incidence of and mortality rate for pancreatic 17
cancer is increasing. By 2020, it is estimated that pancreatic 18
cancer will move from the fourth to the second leading cause of 19
cancer death in the United States; and20

       WHEREAS, In 2012, the United States Congress enacted the 21
"Recalcitrant Cancer Research Act," which requires the National 22
Cancer Institute to develop a scientific framework for conducting 23
research on pancreatic cancer and other deadly cancers; and24

       WHEREAS, The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network is a national 25
organization serving individuals with pancreatic cancer through a 26
comprehensive approach, including promoting the enactment of 27
public policy initiatives, increasing funding for pancreatic 28
cancer research, providing services and support to individuals 29
with pancreatic cancer, and increasing public awareness and 30
education regarding effective treatments and a cure for pancreatic 31
cancer; and32

       WHEREAS, The Pancreatic Cancer Action Network and its 33
affiliates in Ohio support individuals currently battling 34
pancreatic cancer and are committed to finding a cure for this 35
devastating disease; and36

       WHEREAS, The good health and well-being of the residents of 37
Ohio are enhanced due to increased awareness of pancreatic cancer 38
and conducting research on early detection, causes, and effective 39
treatments; now therefore be it40

       RESOLVED, That we, the members of the 130th General Assembly 41
of the State of Ohio, in adopting this resolution, declare 42
November 2013 as "Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month" in the State 43
of Ohio; and be it further44

       RESOLVED, That the Clerk of the Senate transmit duly 45
authenticated copies of this resolution to the news media of Ohio.46
