SYNOPSIS

Urges NJT to undertake construction of Hackensack to Hawthorne commuter rail line.

CURRENT VERSION OF TEXT

     As introduced.

An Assembly Resolution urging the New Jersey Transit Corporation to undertake the construction of a Hackensack to Hawthorne commuter rail line.

Whereas, The North Jersey Rail Coalition (NJRC) is a grassroots organization of elected officials from Passaic, Bergen, and Hudson counties urging the expansion of mass transit options in Northern New Jersey to drive economic development, connect major employment centers, and reduce traffic on New Jersey's highway system; and

Whereas, Specifically, the NJRC supports a dormant New Jersey Transit project to reintroduce commuter rail service on the New York, Susquehanna and Western Railway right-of-way through Passaic, Bergen, and Hudson counties; and

Whereas, The first phase of the proposed commuter rail service project (project) would begin in Hawthorne Borough, Passaic County and end in Hackensack City, Bergen County; and

Whereas, The second phase of the project would occur further east in Hudson County, providing a connection to the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail line at the Tonnelle Avenue Station in North Bergen Township; and

Whereas, The portion of the project in Passaic and Bergen counties would provide a key connection between Saint Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Paterson City and Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack City; and

Whereas, Investing in transportation infrastructure is one of the best ways to provide a boost to the economy and to support long-term growth and opportunity, especially in New Jersey's cities; and

Whereas, The expansion of commuter rail service, including light rail, is a key part of a prudent transportation strategy that attracts business and increases property values; and

Whereas, Metropolitan areas across the country have shown that investing in cost-effective, transportation infrastructure drives economic development and attracts developers and investors to those areas; and

Whereas, It is altogether fitting and proper for this House to support the construction of the Hawthorne to Hackensack commuter rail service project in order to improve the State's transportation system, foster economic growth, and spur job creation in this State; now, therefore,

Be It Resolved by the General Assembly of the State of New Jersey:

     1.    This House urges New Jersey Transit Corporation to undertake the construction of the Hawthorne to Hackensack commuter rail line service project to foster economic growth and spur job creation in this State.

     2.    Copies of this resolution, as filed with the Secretary of State, shall be transmitted by the Clerk of the General Assembly to the Office of the Governor, the Commissioner of the Department of Transportation, and the Executive Director of the New Jersey Transit Corporation.
