Senate Concurrent Resolution 623

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION COMMENDING AND CONGRATULATING THE GULFPORT HIGH SCHOOL "ADMIRALS" BASKETBALL TEAM AND COACH OWEN MILLER FOR WINNING THEIR NINTH STATE CHAMPIONSHIP.

     WHEREAS, on a court filled with three Dandy Dozen players, Junior Guard Jahshire Hardnett hit two clutch free throws with 9.3 seconds remaining to help Gulfport High School secure a 64-59 win over Grenada in the MHSAA Class 6A Boys State Championship Game on March 15, 2014, at the Mississippi Coliseum; and

     WHEREAS, the victory gave Gulfport its ninth State Championship - a state record - and first since it won in Class 5A in 2002; and

     WHEREAS, Jahshire Hardnett, 5'11" Guard with a devastating crossover and a Dandy Dozen Senior, scored 30 points, including a pair of key free throws late, and was named the game's MVP.  Every time Grenada made a run, Hardnett quickly put a stop to it; and

     WHEREAS, the 2013-2014 Admirals Basketball Team Roster is:  Seniors Derrick Anderson, Dimitri Cook, Jevon Floyd, Jerron Kennedy, Walter Stevenson and Leondre Wilson have provided tremendous leadership and motivation for Juniors Royce Davison, Richaud Floyd, Jahshire Hardnett and Michael Miller; Sophomores Tyrell McArthur, Alton Conerly, Jonathan Floyd, Lee Harper, Trey Cook, Carl Terrell and Raekwon Murphy; and Freshmen Quieran Gray and Jerron Kennedy; Head Coach Owen Miller; Assistant Coaches Heath Cooper, Courtenay Brown and David Austin; Athletic Trainer Carlos Evers; and Managers Mosiah Stubbs, Breaunna Poole, Najla Lombard, Deven Soto and Joseph Harvey; and

     WHEREAS, it is with great pride that we recognize this Championship Team which has earned a reputation for excellence and brought honor to their school, their community and to the State of Mississippi:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby commend and congratulate the Gulfport High School "Admirals" Basketball Team and Coach Owen Miller for winning their ninth State Championship, and extend our best wishes to the team, coaches, parents and sponsors for future success.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Coach Miller and Gulfport Principal Michael Lindsey, forwarded to the Gulfport School District Board of Trustees, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
