Senate Concurrent Resolution 596

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION MOURNING THE LOSS AND COMMENDING THE PUBLIC SERVICE OF FORMER STATE SENATOR AND DECORATED RETIRED UNITED STATES ARMY OFFICER GEORGE E. GUERIERI, SR., OF SOUTHAVEN, MISSISSIPPI, AND EXTENDING THE SYMPATHY OF THE LEGISLATURE.

     WHEREAS, former State Senator George E. Guerieri, Sr., 86, of Southaven, Mississippi, passed away February 25, 2014; and

     WHEREAS, he was a highly decorated Retired United States Army Officer and served as a Mississippi State Senator for 12 years; and

     WHEREAS, Senator Guerieri served at the end of WWII as a sailor on a hospital ship.  He later served in the Korean War and the Vietnam War, as well as in the Office of the Chief of Staff of the Army at the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.  Lieutenant Colonel Guerieri's decorations include the Army Legion of Merit and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Silver Star, among many others; and

     WHEREAS, as a Senator in Mississippi he authored the very first State Racketeering laws in the country and was recognized by President Reagan for such; and

     WHEREAS, Senator Guerieri was married to the late Jewel Abel Guerieri and also preceded in death by a son, George Guerieri, Jr.  He is survived by a daughter, Judy Hobdy of Anniston, Alabama; a son, Ron Guerieri of Madison, Mississippi; along with seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.  George Guerieri served as Chairman of the Military Order of World Wars' Memphis Chapter and the President of the Southaven Rotary Club as well as President of Christ the King Catholic Church's Parish Council and Knights of Columbus; and

     WHEREAS, he was a leader of men, a true patriot and a wonderful committed husband and father.  George was a respected member of the Mississippi Senate.  He will be missed by many; and we take great pride in the fact that a man of such character, ability and attainments as Lieutenant Colonel Guerieri possessed is numbered as one of our most loyal members of the Mississippi Legislature:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby mourn the loss and commend the public service of former State Senator and decorated retired U.S. Army Officer George E. Guerieri, Sr.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to the surviving family of Senator Guerieri, forwarded to the Mississippi Division of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
