A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING DR. JOHNNY ANTHONY, ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR EMERITUS OF MUSIC AT JACKSON STATE UNIVERSITY, FOR HIS OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE FIELD OF MUSIC AND FOR HIS DEDICATION AND COMMITMENT TO THE TOWN OF WALLS AND DESOTO COUNTY.

     WHEREAS, a native of Walls, Mississippi, Dr. Johnny Anthony is a 1960 graduate of Delta Center High School, a 1964 graduate of Rust College and a 1974 graduate of the University of Iowa, where he earned Master's and Ph.D. degrees in Music Education; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Anthony is Associate Professor Emeritus of Music at Jackson State University where he served in various leadership capacities, and served as Coordinator of the Graduate Program in Jackson State's Department of Music for 35 years; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Anthony holds the distinct honor of being the first African-American President of the Mississippi Music Educators Association, and has humbly served in various capacities on both the regional and national levels of the association; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Anthony has remained actively involved in the City of Jackson, and has demonstrated his commitment to the youth of Jackson by serving as a mentor for Jackson Public School students for the past 27 years, and by establishing tennis programs throughout the community for underprivileged youth; and

     WHEREAS, in his spare time, Dr. Anthony is an avid tennis player, and has remained actively involved in the game of tennis for over 40 years as a player, captain, coach and mentor.  He is also a faithful member of Pearl Street AME Church, where he serves as Steward, Director of the Instrumental Ensemble, and member of the Music Committee, Sanctuary Choir, Men's Chorus, and the Pearl Street Men's Quintet - The Majestic Four Plus One; and

     WHEREAS, Dr. Anthony is married to the former Armetha Woodall, a retired Math and Special Education Teacher in the Rankin County Public School system.  Dr. Anthony and Armetha are the proud parents of two sons:  Vincent L. Anthony, Doctor of Internal Medicine and Specialist in Nephrology, Los Angeles, California; and Arthur E. Anthony, Attorney and Partner in the International Law Firm Lock Liddle Bissel & Sapp of Dallas, Texas; and

     WHEREAS, we pay tribute to a most public-spirited Mississippi citizen and Music Educator:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That Mayor Patti Denison and the Walls Board of Aldermen, do hereby honor and commend Dr. Johnny Anthony for his artistic contributions to the field of music and for his dedication to his hometown of Walls, Mississippi; his adopted home, Jackson, Mississippi; and the State of Mississippi.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Dr. Johnny Anthony and his family, forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning, the Mayor of Walls, Mississippi, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
