Senate Concurrent Resolution 548

(As Adopted by Senate and House)

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING THE ATHLETIC EXCELLENCE OF OLYMPIC MEDALIST DAVID "TRELL" KIMMONS AND THE COMMUNITY PRIDE HE HAS BROUGHT TO HIS HOMETOWN OF COLDWATER, MISSISSIPPI.

WHEREAS, few people in the sport of track and field have a better start than Trell Kimmons and it paid off big for the sprinter in 2012.  Kimmons recorded the fastest indoor 60m time in the world this season, along with leading off the American record-setting 4x100-meter relay that took Silver in the London Olympic Games.  He was also a member of Team USA in the 100 meter at the 2011 World Outdoor Championships.  He also displayed raw speed and an efficient start at an early age when he ran the fifth fastest 60m time in the world in 2006 when he was just 20 years old.  Also a standout football player in high school, Kimmons caught 13 touchdown passes in his senior year and was recruited to play at the University of Alabama; and

WHEREAS, preparing to run the first leg of the 400-meter relay at this summer's Olympic Games in London, Trell Kimmons couldn't help but think of his native Coldwater, Mississippi.  "It was probably one of the most memorable days of my life," said Kimmons.  "Going through that tunnel, all I could think about was Coldwater.  I could not let you guys down."  Running with Justin Gatlin, Tyson Gay and Ryan Bailey, Team USA finished second to Jamaica to win the Silver Medal with an American-record time of 37.04; and

WHEREAS, on Monday, two days after Coldwater honored their hero with a parade, Kimmons answered questions from young and old.  The visit by the 2004 Coldwater graduate came just weeks after the completion of the library's summer reading program, which dealt with the topic of "Following Your Dreams"; and

WHEREAS, Kimmons, who ran track at Hinds Community College, is still tied for the fastest time in the 100-meter dash (10.39) in the Mississippi High School Activities Association.  Even with the Olympics over, his dedication to the sport is year-round; and

WHEREAS, at the 2004 World Junior Championships in Athletics, Kimmons was part of a Gold Medal winning the 4x100-meter relay squad that established a junior world record with 38.66 seconds.  Kimmons attended Hinds Community College, where he won three individual National Championships (200m outdoor in 2005, 60m and 200m indoor in 2006) and set national championship indoor meet records at 60m and 200m.  He committed to Mississippi State University in November 2005, but chose to turn pro in March 2006; and

WHEREAS, Kimmons finished fourth in the 60m at the 2010 International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) World Indoor Championships with 6.59 seconds.  At the 2010 USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, he won a Silver Medal behind Walter Dix.  At the 2010 Weltklasse Zürich meeting, he ran a new personal best of 9.95 seconds over 100m, becoming the 72nd person to break the ten-second barrier; and

WHEREAS, it is special for young people from his hometown to see a five-time All-American who has made it to the level he has.  The commitment is the backbone for what schools teach.  Seeing a big-time superstar should help them prepare in practice and in the weight room, which will help out on the field; and

WHEREAS, it is with great respect that we pay tribute to the enormous energy and civic pride of this athlete who has brought honor to his community and to the State of Mississippi:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize the athletic excellence of Olympic Medalist David "Trell" Kimmons and the community pride he has brought to his hometown of Coldwater, Mississippi, and extend our best wishes to Trell and his family.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That this resolution be presented to Trell Kimmons, forwarded to the Mayor and Board of Aldermen of Coldwater, Mississippi, and made available to the Capitol Press Corps.
