A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION ACKNOWLEDGING AND COMMENDING THE REPUTABLE SERVICE AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT OF THE TENNESSEE VALLEY AUTHORITY AND CONGRATULATING ITS ENDURING HISTORY OF PROFESSIONALISM ON THE OCCASION OF CELEBRATING ITS 80TH ANNIVERSARY.

     WHEREAS, May 2013 marked the 80th anniversary celebration of one of the nation's most premiere federally owned corporations to provide navigation, flood control, electricity generation, fertilizer manufacturing and economic development; and

     WHEREAS, the Association of Tennessee Valley Governments (ATVG) represents local governments within more than 200 Tennessee Valley River Region Counties which closely monitor issues associated with Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA); and

     WHEREAS, the Tennessee Valley Authority Act was signed into law on May 18, 1933, and its mission has been to provide affordable, reliable power, integrated resource management and sustainable economic development, and TVA has been successfully fulfilling that mission for eight decades; and

     WHEREAS, local governments in the seven-state TVA service region, including Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky, Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia, have not only benefitted from, but have played significant roles in all aspects of this mission, beginning in the depths of the Great Depression, continuing forward to this present day and looking ahead to a promising future; and

     WHEREAS, hundreds of temporary and permanent employees in communities throughout the seven-state service area have supported the development and continue the maintenance of TVA facilities and the implementation of TVA programs; and

     WHEREAS, since its founding, TVA has, in recent years, adopted a renewed vision that will enable the association to lead the region and the nation toward a cleaner and more secure energy future; and

     WHEREAS, this vision is to be one of the nation's leading providers of low-cost and cleaner energy by 2020, while being a leader in increased energy efficiency which will be beneficial to the citizens of all our communities and to local governments; and

     WHEREAS, it is the policy of this Legislature to acknowledge the paramount services provided by such an efficient organization as TVA and its members, who have endeavored tirelessly to provide committed and quality benefits to its customer base:

     NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF MISSISSIPPI, THE SENATE CONCURRING THEREIN, That we do hereby recognize and congratulate the Tennessee Valley Authority on the most auspicious occasion of its 80th anniversary and extend grateful thanks to Tennessee Valley Authority for its positive impact upon local governments and our citizens.

     BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be furnished to the TVA Headquarters in Knoxville, Tennessee, to each member-state office and to the members of the Capitol Press Corps.
