1.1A bill for an act
1.2relating to peace officers; providing reciprocity for military experience;amending
1.3Minnesota Statutes 2013 Supplement, section 626.8517.
1.4BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

1.5    Section 1. Minnesota Statutes 2013 Supplement, section 626.8517, is amended to read:
1.6626.8517 ELIGIBILITY FOR RECIPROCITY EXAMINATION BASED ON
1.7RELEVANT MILITARY EXPERIENCE.
1.8(a) For purposes of this section:
1.9(1) "active service" has the meaning given in section 190.05, subdivision 5; and
1.10(2) "relevant military experience" means:
1.11(i) five four years' active cumulative service experience in a military law enforcement
1.12occupational specialty;
1.13(ii) three two years' active cumulative service experience in a military law
1.14enforcement occupational specialty, and completion of a two-year or more degree from a
1.15regionally accredited postsecondary education institution; or
1.16(iii) five four years' cumulative experience as a full-time peace officer in another
1.17state combined with active cumulative service experience in a military law enforcement
1.18occupational specialty.
1.19(b) A person is eligible to take the reciprocity examination if the person has relevant
1.20military experience and:
1.21(1) has been honorably discharged from military active service as evidenced by
1.22the most recent form DD-214; or
1.23(2) is currently in active service as evidenced by:
1.24(i) active duty orders providing service time in military police specialty;
2.1(ii) a United States Department of Defense Manpower Data Center status report
2.2pursuant to Service Members Civil Relief Act, active duty status report; or
2.3(iii) Military Personnel Center assignment information.
2.4(c) A person who passed the examination under paragraph (b), clause (2), shall
2.5not be eligible to be licensed as a peace officer until honorably discharged as evidenced
2.6by the most recent form DD-214.
2.7EFFECTIVE DATE.This section is effective the day following final enactment.
