HOUSE BILL No. 4614

     A bill to amend 1976 PA 451, entitled

 

"The revised school code,"

 

(MCL 380.1 to 380.1852) by adding section 1278e.

 

THE PEOPLE OF THE STATE OF MICHIGAN ENACT:

 

     Sec. 1278e. (1) Subject to subsection (2), in addition to the

 

requirements under sections 1278a and 1278b, the board of a school

 

district or board of directors of a public school academy shall not

 

award a high school diploma to a pupil unless the pupil completes

 

and submits the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

 

     (2) The board of a school district or board of directors of a

 

public school academy may exempt a pupil from the requirement in

 

subsection (1) if the pupil is unable to meet the requirement due

 


to an extenuating circumstance, as determined by the board or board

 

of directors.

 

     (3) At least annually, the board of a school district or board

 

of directors of a public school academy that operates a high school

 

shall report both of the following to the department:

 

     (a) The number of pupils enrolled in the school district or

 

public school academy who completed and submitted the Free

 

Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in the immediately

 

preceding school year.

 

     (b) The number of pupils enrolled in the school district or

 

public school academy who were granted an exemption under

 

subsection (2) during the immediately preceding school year.
