RESOLUTION
Recognizing
and commending The American Legion on the occasion of its 93rd birthday; and for
other purposes.
WHEREAS,
March 9, 2012, marks the celebration of the 93rd birthday of The American
Legion; and
WHEREAS,
the Department of Georgia received its temporary charter on March 19th, 1935,
for Frank P. Dorris Post 145; and
WHEREAS,
charter members at this time were W.O. Carver, James R. Estes, J.L. Dorris, S.G.
Baggett, Joe R. Estes, Harold E. Warren, Oscar Woody, C.T. Kilgore, W.L. Bobo,
G.P. Gilbert, J.C. Wessinger, Sam B. Estes, H.H. Jay, S.O. Hitchcock, Farris W.
Horton, and Floyd House; and
WHEREAS,
the charters were signed by Department Commander Frank A. Kelly, Department
Adjutant George Osborne, National Commander Frank N. Bilgrams, Jr., and National
Adjutant Frank E. Samuel; and
WHEREAS,
the post officers at the time were Commander O.J. Baggett, Adjutant L.E. Adams,
Senior Vice Commander T.O. Rainwater, Junior Vice Commanders L.J. Austin and
E.E. Hardin, Jr., Finance Officer F.W. Rhodes, Service Officer W.J. Teal, and
Sergeant-at-Arms J.H. Sample; and
WHEREAS,
Mr. Leonard Santangelo is one of 17 known survivors of Pearl Harbor in the State
of Georgia and will receive a Special Recognition Award for his 27 years of
service on the executive board of The American Legion Post 145; and
WHEREAS,
The American Legion focuses on service to veterans, servicemembers, and
communities and currently has about 2.4 million members at 14,000 posts
worldwide; and
WHEREAS, it is abundantly fitting and proper that the outstanding accomplishments of this organization be appropriately recognized.

NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SENATE that the members of this body commend
The American Legion for its contributions to veterans, servicemembers, and
communitites and congratulate it on the occasion of its 93rd
birthday.

IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of the Senate is authorized and directed
to transmit an appropriate copy of this resolution to the public and the press.
