SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION NO. 83
RECOGNIZING AUGUST 17, 2023, AS “NATIONAL NONPROFIT DAY” IN THE STATE OF DELAWARE.
WHEREAS, National Nonprofit Day is annually commemorated on August 17 th to recognize nonprofit organizations’ ongoing efforts to serve the local community; and
WHEREAS, the Tariff Act, which was signed on August 17, 1894, established the tax-exempt status of nonprofits and is the reason for the date of National Nonprofit Day; and
WHEREAS, nonprofits throughout the country work to promote awareness and offer assistance to individuals who otherwise would not be able to afford it ; and
WHEREAS, Americans donate hundreds of billions of dollars to nonprofits every year; and
WHEREAS, although most nonprofits are small, community-based organizations, the National Council of Nonprofits estimates that nonprofits employ more than 10 percent of the United States’ private workforce; and
WHEREAS, according to the Delaware Alliance for Nonprofit Advancement, there are over 3,000 tax-exempt organizations operating in Delaware, with 1,200 of these organizations providing services to Delawareans and visitors to the State; and
WHEREAS, these organizations play a vital role in Delaware and throughout the country by offering services such as food banks, affordable housing, medical care, legal counsel, education, daycare, after-school activities, and more.
NOW, THEREFORE:
BE IT RESOLVED by the Senate of the 152nd General Assembly of the State of Delaware, the House of Representatives concurring therein, that August 17, 2023, is recognized as “National Nonprofit Day” in the State of Delaware.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the members of the General Assembly encourage Delawareans to become more aware of ways in which nonprofits work to improve the lives of all Delaware residents.
